Gnostic Gospel of Thomas
Jesus said: «… When you get to know thyself,
then you will be known and you will realize that you are the
son of the Living Father…».
The Gospel of Thomas —also called the Coptic Gospel
of Thomas or Gnostic Gospel of Thomas— is an apocryphal
gospel that contains 114 sayings attributed to Jesus of Nazareth.
It has been conserved in a papyrus manuscript in Coptic, discovered
in 1945 in the Egyptian locality of Nag Hammadi. Some of the
sayings in this gospel resemble the canonical gospels of Mathew,
Lucas, and Juan, others were unknown until their discovery.
As opposed to the canonical gospels, Thomas’s gospels
do not adopt the structure of a story about the life of Jesus,
but contain only sayings (in Greek “lodge”) of
Jesus framed in conversations that he maintained with several
of his disciples. The authorship of the work is attributed
in a brief prologue to Didymus Judas Thomas («dydimus» means
'twin'): "These are the secret words
that were pronounced by the Living Jesus and that Didymus Judas
Thomas recorded in writing".
It finalizes with the title "The Gospel according to Thomas". "He
who shall find the interpretation of these words will not prove
death" (logion 1) Why the use of these secret words? In
the first parable of the Gospel, man is incited to a quest. «The
one that seeks, mustn’t stop searching until he finds,
and, when he has found, he will be disturbed, and, having been
disturbed, he will be amazed and will reign above All" (logion
2).
Here the quest is encouraged and the confusion in the man
upon finding it is exposed, but then his disturbance will be
compensated by the answer that explains the mysteries. «Many
times you have desired to hear these words that I tell you
and you do not have anyone to hear them from» (logion
38).
The hero of these acts is at the same time the confidant
and herald of the secret words of Jesus. In chapter 38 of the
Acts of Thomas, the apostle is addressed in the following way: «Twin
of Christ, apostle of the Highest, and co-initiated in the
secret doctrine of Christ, you that have received his purposes
and his secret words».
